Tebboune: Algeria Respected for Independent Foreign Policy and Regional Peace Role
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to an independent foreign policy, saying the country is internationally respected for its role in promoting regional peace and stability.
Speaking during his regular meeting with national media representatives, aired Saturday evening, Tebboune said Algeria’s foreign policy is based on respect for state sovereignty, non-interference, international law and dialogue.
Addressing regional issues, the president stressed that stability in the Sahel must be rooted in development, warning that poverty and weak state institutions create fertile ground for terrorism and instability.
On Niger, Tebboune said Algeria had sent military aircraft to the neighboring country amid what he described as a provocation. He also stressed that Algeria would not interfere in Mali’s internal affairs, describing relations between the two countries as particularly close.
Regarding Sudan, Tebboune called for an end to divisions and foreign interference, while reaffirming Algeria’s support for both international and national legitimacy.
On Western Sahara, he reiterated Algeria’s support for direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front, stressing that the Sahrawi people should determine their own future.
Tebboune also said Algeria welcomes visits by all heads of state, including Iran’s president, reaffirming the country’s independent decision-making. He described the passage of Algerian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz as normal, saying Algeria has no problem with any country.
The president further reaffirmed Algeria’s intention to maintain balanced relations with Russia, the United States and China, highlighting the growing economic ties between Algiers and Moscow.
