President Tebboune declares three days of national mourning Aafter Ddeadly Boumerdès bus crash

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Friday declared three days of national mourning after a passenger bus overturned in the Berrahmoune El Karma area of Boumerdès, killing at least 25 people and injuring 44 others, according to preliminary official figures.

In a message of condolence, Tebboune expressed his deep sorrow over one of the country’s deadliest road accidents in recent years. He offered his sympathies to the victims’ families and described the tragedy as a painful loss for the nation.

The president said the circumstances surrounding the crash would be fully investigated and stressed that justice would be applied firmly once the inquiry determines responsibility. Referring to the country’s continuing road safety challenges, he condemned what he described as “road criminals” and “road terror,” saying those found responsible would face the full force of the law.

Tebboune also paid tribute to those who lost their lives, praying for God’s mercy upon the victims and offering support to their grieving families. He wished a speedy recovery to the dozens of people injured in the crash, many of whom were taken to nearby hospitals after emergency crews responded to the scene.

As part of the government’s response, the president ordered three days of national mourning beginning Friday. National flags will be flown at half-mast across Algeria during the mourning period in honor of the victims.

The fatal crash has renewed concerns over road safety in Algeria, where serious traffic accidents continue to claim hundreds of lives each year despite ongoing awareness campaigns and stricter traffic enforcement. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the Boumerdès bus accident, with further details expected as the inquiry progresses.
